Rock-a-Stack turned 60 and still tops registries. We build toys the second and third kid will use too.

How we would pick, in three moves

  1. Start with the age. Not the birthday coming up, the one your kid is at right now. Toys pitched a year ahead mostly gather dust.
  2. Watch how they already play. A thrower needs balls and ramps, a talker needs figures and playsets. The toy should feed the habit that is already there.
  3. Check the reviews, then stop. Two or three well-loved options beat twenty open tabs. Pick one, wrap it, done.

Keeping toys in the game

Do

  • Wipe plastic toys with mild soapy water and let them dry before the next round.
  • Pull batteries out of anything going into storage for more than a month.
  • Rotate toys in and out of a closet. Old toy plus two weeks away equals new toy.
  • Keep the small Imaginext accessories in a zip bag between missions.

Do not

  • Run electronic toys through the dishwasher or washing machine, speakers hate it.
  • Leave plush friends in a hot car, glue and stuffing both complain.
  • Mix dead and fresh batteries in one toy, it drains the new ones fast.
  • Hand a 3-year set to a baby because a sibling got bored of it.

Why we still do this

A kid who is playing is a kid who is learning, and neither of them should feel like work. That has been the whole idea since Herman Fisher and Irving Price started gluing wooden ducks to pull strings in 1930. We make toys for the floor, the crib rail, the back seat and the bathtub, and we test them with the toughest reviewers on earth: one-year-olds.

Reading the catalog like we do

Our catalog runs from a $1 board book to a $280 collector set, and the fastest way through it is the age plus shelf combination. The shelves below are the same ones our play lab uses internally: they group toys by what a kid does with them, not by what aisle a store would file them in. Two shelves deserve a special word. Little People is the longest-running neighborhood in toys, chunky figures sized for a toddler fist since 1959. Imaginext is its older sibling, built for preschoolers who want a villain, a trap door and a plan. If your kid narrates while playing, they are ready for one of these two.
